The Miami University Art Museum regularly works with our friends at the Myaamia Center on campus to help make Myaamia cultural objects available for people to see and learn from.
In addition to the installation of new exhibitions this semester, staff also worked to enhance the Global Perspectives exhibition with two Myaamia objects now featured for the first time in this semi-permanent installation. Eugene Brown’s (Myaamia, Native American, 1926-2017) original A Tribe Named Miami, A Surveyor’s Stake, A Town Named Oxford (2003) is on loan to MUAM by Dr. Joseph Leonard, the son of the late Myaamia Chief Floyd Leonard. In 2008, Brown’s work was enlarged as a cast bronze piece located in MUAM’s Sculpture Park (pictured below at right).

A Tribe Named Miami, A Surveyor’s Stake, A Town Named Oxford, 2008, Eugene Brown (Myaamia, Native American, b. 1926-2017) a colorized cast bronze sculpture.
The second piece is a pair of mahkisina (moccasins) created in 2019 by Myaamia artist and scholar Scott Shoemaker. The mahkisina were commissioned by MUAM for the Spring 2020 exhibition, Myaamia Ribbonwork.
